When You Want To Find a Breeder and Not a Rescue or Shelter

STOP AND THINK

I say this becuase too many people do not use this as their first choice. And often it ends up the pet is homeless. So first stop, breath ad think.

Puppies are allot of work around the clock. If you cannot commit then consider an older dog.

It takes time to find a responsible breeder. If you need one now go to a rescue or shelter.

It takes work. If you cannot put forth the effort then go to a rescue or shelter.

There is nothing wrong with shelters or rescues as long as you choose wisly and stop and think.

There is nothing with taking the time and researching and choosing a responsible breeder.

Think:

What you want

How much time you have

Were you will be in 10 years

Were you will be in 15 years

If you want more information on finding a rescue or shelter dog please see http://www.wonderpuppy.net/1choose.php#adult

Breeders are a dime a dozen, choose to be great.

I am not going to repeat what is in so many other websites. What I am going to say and repeat is this:

It takes work and time to find a responsible breeder.

It might cost more to find a responsible breeder.

It may take a year o more to have a puppy from a responsible breeder.

It is much better to support the responsible breeder.

Pet Overpopulation

Overpopulation leads to neglect, abuse, homlessness, increased taxes, accidents, bites, ill health, agression and death and euthinasia.

Shelters were not created to be a homeless dump for animals. They were created to help and assist in times of need. A great example of a major fail is Hurricane Katrina. The shelters are full, understaffed and underpaid. They didn't have any place to put animals that needed temporary help. People died trying to keep their pets, other people let their pets fend for themself others just let their pets die. Had shelters been staffed and empty they could have provided shelter (hence why they are called shelters) until the owners could be reunited. (yes it was a mess) Shelters were ment to provide help and houseing temporarly, not take in unwanted.

Only the consumer can stop pet overpopulation. It all starts with responsible consumership. Be an educated consumer. Do not lower your standards. It will also bring back the health of the purebred dog which is declining rapidly due to over breeding.

If people stop buying, they will stop breeding. If only the responsible breeders are reconised then the irresponsible will fade. They may not 100% go away but it will decline.

Responsible Breeders Do Not Add to the Pet Overpopulation or Shelters

Responsible breeders take great pains in ensuring the future of their offspring as well as their breeds. They are active in rescue and support their breed rescue. They are active in their breed clubs. They have legal contracts that support the puppy and it's wellbeing for life. They are educated in proper spay and neuter ages and will be a mentor for the new breeder, handler ect.

Breed Clubs, Shows and Events

It's a great idea to look up events in your area. You can find dog shows and sporting events. These are excallent places to find and meet some people. But remember, they are working and might be busy. So instead of taking their time at the event ask for their number and a good time to come back or call.

It's okk to not know what you want. Visiting these places can help you in your research. It's not ok to get a pet while you still dont really know what you want. So take your time. Make it a good family project.

Always Visit the Shelters, Adoptions and Rescues First

While researchng for your breeder take advantage of the shelters and rescues in your area. Purebreds make up a big population of the shelters and it can be differnt for every location. Visit the adoptions at the Petsmart and other locations. Do not shop stores that sell puppies and kittens. Only the ones that sponser adoptions.

This way you can meet your breed of choice and talk to people who know the breed. This is valuable information for you. You need to know about the breed you want. Not just common stuff like size and coat but you need to know it's health genetics, what is' prone too. What the good and the bad of each breed is.

You also just might find the perfect pet. Remember if your not ready for puppyhood (nothing wrong with that) then an older dog may be your answer.

A responsible breeder will also ask if you have looked at the breed rescues. This is becuase they know they have good pets and might have the right match for you. They do not wnt to take a adoptive home away.

You may also opt to foster instead also. It's very rewarding.

Every breed has a breed club and breed rescue.

Desinger Breeds and the Like

I have no problem with trying to imporve on something. I have a problem with people on a bandwagon and trying to profit from something.

Creating a new breed is very hard work and can take over 10/20 years of extremely dedicated work. It's not a wham bam here is a new breed mam, aint it cute? It takes knowing the breeds, knowing what your goal is, knowing genetics and knowing what to do with the offspring your producing.

A dog of 2 or more breeds is a mutt. Face it and you will be much better educated then most.

There is no perfect dog or pet or a one size fits all pet. There are pros and cons to all so it's good to know it and your limits.

The problem with desinger breeds is that they are being created from unhealthy stock. Temperment and health are not the goals. Responsible breeders are against desinger breeds and therefore will not sell to anyone wanting for that purpose. So the stock that is left to breed with is pet store and irresponsible breeders. Take a poodle with 25 health issues and breed it to a lab with 25 health issues and some puppies will be healthy others will have 50 health issues. It's a russian roulete with lives and your pocket book.

Hybrids are another story. Some people are now calling desinger breeds hybrids, it's a mutt. Remember, be educated. Do not be fooled by language jargon and special words and phrases. Get the facts form the breed clubs and breed shows.

Wolves and mixes. Wolves are beautiful. Wolves are wild animals that are having a very hard time with the public. Be sure to visit and check with your wolf rescue and sancuary before adding a wolf or wolf dog to your home.
